Saturday was one of the greatest musical days of my life…and I was blessed to share it with my soon-to-be 15 year old twin daughters (who have already seen more than 30 rock & roll hall of famers).
We celebrated the 25th anniversary of Farm Aid at Miller Park here in Milwaukee. This was the first Farm Aid concert in Wisconsin and the first ever in a stadium. It was also my daughters’ first stadium show.
DELICIOUS! That’s the word that best describes our experience. Farm Aid is a grate cause, with grate people, grate music and grate local family-farmed food. In other words, it was a freakin’ lovefest. They also do their best to make the day as green as possible, with an army of volunteers helping to make certain as much as possible is either recycled or composted.
I’ll share my thoughts throughout the week to (hopefully) describe the fabulous emotion of the day. You can find reviews everywhere, so I’m just gonna share our highlights.
For starters, the evening’s lineup went from Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds to John Mellencamp to the king, Neil Young. Finally, at 10:50 Willie Nelson comes out with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler in tow. Mind-bogglingly groovy as Tyler pulled out the harmonica to jam for a couple tunes. Then it was Willie & Family for a few, before all of the day’s performers rocked the shit out of it. It was an old-time revival as they concluded the festivities with Hank Williams’ country/gospel classic “I Saw the Light,” and then sent us home smiling with “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms.”
And that’s just the last four-and-a-half hours of the show!
If you wanna see the 53-second video I recorded less than five minutes after the concert ended, please click here. As you’ll see, I was totally stoked!
