He’s played with some of the true luminaries of country and alt-country music, and now it’s his turn to shine. Kenny Meeks is the real deal when it comes to roots music heavily influenced by the blues. A recent Nashville appearance backed by a four-piece band was evidence Meeks is ready to hit the road.
Playing a balanced mix of original tunes and familiar country covers, Meeks crafts a live show as carefully as he crafts his music. The title track from his debut solo release, Tell My Angel was everything you might expect with a superb delivery musically and lyrically. Among other favorite originals were Who Am I? Somethin’s Cookin’, Real Long Day, and Unfaded. Within these tunes and ballads, one will find country, blues, rock, and a little honky tonk that blend into that perfect mix we used to call alt-Country, but is more popularly known as Americana.
On the pure country side, Meeks played covers like Folsom Prison Blues, I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You), and You’re Cheatin’ Heart. Legendary songs from legendary country icons lent familiarity to this show and a foundation to showcase his original songs, ultimately highlighting Meeks’ maturity as a performer.
His band was well-rehearsed and provided a rich accompaniment to Kenny’s vocals and acoustic guitar. It’s the mark of seasoned pros who know how much is enough, and when to jump in. It’s more than refreshing to hear live music designed strictly for the listener’s enjoyment.
